The Future of International E-Waste Recycling
Not every country in the world has rules on the recycling and disposal of e-waste. Sadly in far too many countries, waste is not recycled properly if at all and finds its way into the ground and the water table where it can cause significant environmental damage and considerable health problems for the people exposed to the water thatâs been contaminated.
One of the biggest problems with this is India, which is the worldâs fifth largest producer of electronic waste, at about two million tons each year. While schemes exist to recycle and dispose of e-waste properly, too much of it is still disposed of through the use of acid baths, burning cables, and dumping the electronics directly to landfill.
Estimates are that some 80% of Indiaâs surface water is polluted and that e-waste has contributed to this. The United Nations though continues to press its member countries to introduce better and more stringent recycling and disposal of e-waste.
In a report from the UN Environment Programme in 2019, which you can read at https://pcs.tv/3ciZzMX, they estimated that some 50 million tons of e-waste is being produced each year, of which only 20% is being recycled. They highlight the value of countries introducing regulated e-waste recycling, pointing out that 1 ton of e-waste can contain 100 times as much gold as 1 ton of gold ore and that the value of e-waste is worth more than $60 billion globally every year.
If you live or work in a country where there is little or no formal regulation of e-waste recycling and disposal, this doesnât mean that companies and organizations to help you achieve this donât exist. It may take a little searching online to find the right companies, but it is definitely worth spending the time.
